Philippe Park
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Philippe Park is a beautiful park in Safety Harbor, Florida, located in Pinellas County. It covers 122 acres and was once part of a plantation owned by Odet Philippe, who is credited with bringing grapefruit to Florida. Odet Philippe was the first person from outside the area to settle in the county, arriving in 1842. Though his exact burial place in the park is unknown, visitors can still enjoy the natural beauty of the area he once cared for.
The park is home to an important historical site: a Tocobaga Indian mound known as the Safety Harbor Site, which is a National Historic Landmark. This temple mound is one of the last remaining traces of the Tocobaga people on the Pinellas Peninsula. Long ago, in 1566, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, the founder of St. Augustine, Florida, visited the site. He came to help make peace between the Tocobaga and another local group, the Calusa. Though a small Spanish outpost was built nearby, it did not last long. Over time, the Tocobaga people faced difficult challenges from diseases and changes to their land.
