The prime minister of Pakistan is the head of government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. This important leader guides the country and helps make big decisions. The prime minister is usually chosen by the members of the National Assembly, which is part of the federal parliament. To become prime minister, a person must have the support of most members in the National Assembly.
The prime minister leads the executive branch and works with a group of leaders called the cabinet. They help manage the country's state economy, make rules for both internal affairs and foreign policy, and even oversee Pakistan's nuclear weapons arsenal. Even though the prime minister has a lot of power, the chief of the army staff often has even more influence in Pakistan.
Even though the prime minister is very important, it has been hard for anyone to serve a full five-year term. Sometimes, the country has been led by the military instead of a prime minister. Still, the prime minister plays a key role in advising the president of Pakistan and helping to keep control over the military leadership.
