Ross J. Anderson

Ross John Anderson (15 September 1956 – 28 March 2024) was a British researcher, author, and industry consultant in security engineering. He worked hard to help make computers and technology safer to use. Anderson was a Professor of Security Engineering at the Department of Computer Science and Technology, University of Cambridge. There, he was part of the University's security group, helping other experts understand how to protect information better. His work touched many areas of technology safety, and he wrote books and articles to share his knowledge with the world.
Education
Ross J. Anderson went to the High School of Glasgow. After that, he studied Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University but did not finish there. He then went to the University of Cambridge and graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and natural science. He was a student at Trinity College, Cambridge. Later, he earned a qualification in computer engineering. Before returning to the University of Cambridge in 1992 to work on his doctorate, he worked in the avionics and banking industry. He completed his PhD in 1995.
Research and career
Ross Anderson was a professor at the University of Cambridge who taught about keeping computers safe. He started teaching there in 1995 and also taught at the University of Edinburgh. He studied how to protect computers, especially in areas like secret codes and making sure technology is reliable.
Anderson helped create important tools for protecting information and found problems in some computer security methods. He believed that computer safety should consider people and society, not just technology. He started groups to discuss technology rules and policies and was known for supporting free ideas and fair rules at his university. He also wrote a well-known book about security engineering.
Personal life and death
Ross J. Anderson met his wife, Shireen, while they were working in Johannesburg. They married in Cambridge in 1992. Shireen works with the Christina Kelly Association at Churchill College, Cambridge. They had one daughter, named Bavani, and four grandchildren.
Anderson passed away suddenly at home with his family in Cambridge on 28 March 2024. He was 67 years old.
