Ruins are the remaining parts of old buildings and structures that have fallen apart over time. They come from many different places and times in history. Some ruins are from very old civilizations like ancient China, Greece, Egypt, and Rome. Others are from places like the Indus Valley, ancient Iraq, and the Incan and Mayan cities in the Americas.

Ruins happen because of many reasons. Natural disasters like earthquakes, storms, and floods can damage buildings. Wars and fights between people can also destroy structures. When towns or cities are left empty and not taken care of, buildings slowly break down because of weather, plants, and people taking away materials.

People who study history and ancient cultures find ruins very important. They help us learn about how people lived long ago. Many famous ruins are now protected as special places called UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which means they are very valuable to everyone in the world.

Cities

Ancient cities were often built with strong walls to protect them. During wars, these cities became important targets and were often damaged or destroyed. For example, Delhi, the capital of India, has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the years. You can still see traces of the old cities in the layout of modern Delhi.

Many cities from the 1900s, like Warsaw, Dresden, and Berlin, were left in ruins after World War II. More recently, cities such as Beirut, Kabul, and Baghdad have also been damaged by wars.

Natural disasters can also destroy entire cities. The ancient city of Pompeii in Italy was completely covered by a volcanic eruption many years ago. Today, its ruins are protected as a special historical site. The city of Lisbon in Portugal was destroyed by a big earthquake and tsunami in 1755, and the city of San Francisco in the United States was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1906.

Deliberate destruction

Sometimes, important old buildings were broken down on purpose because of social, political, or economic reasons. In Rome, leaders tried to protect important statues and buildings, but later, some were taken apart for their materials.

In the 1500s, the English king Henry VIII took over many religious buildings, leaving many abbeys and monasteries empty and falling apart.

In the 1900s, some buildings in Europe were left unfinished on purpose because of high taxes on buildings with roofs. Owners sometimes removed their roofs to protest these taxes.

Relics of steel and wooden towers

Towers made of steel are usually taken apart when they are no longer needed. This is because the steel can be used again or recycled. However, sometimes the bases of these towers stay behind because it costs too much to remove them. An example is the base of the old radio tower in Deutschlandsender Herzberg/Elster.

Bases of big wooden towers, like the one at Transmitter Ismaning, can also be left behind since taking them away can be very hard. People are just starting to think about and study these old industrial sites, often called the "rust belt".

Aesthetics

In modern times ruins such as these are sought after for their aesthetics

In the Middle Ages, Roman ruins were sometimes used as building materials or as subjects for discussions about history. During the Renaissance, ruins became important for artists and architects, inspiring new styles and designs. The discovery of ancient buildings like Nero's Domus Aurea and the excavated cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii influenced many artists and designers.

During the Romantic period, ruins, especially castles, were popular subjects for paintings and gatherings. The idea of designing buildings to create beautiful ruins later became known as "ruin value." Today, ruins continue to inspire artists and are often used in movies and books as symbols of change or decline.
