Stenopelix
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Stenopelix (meaning "narrow pelvis") is a genus of early plant-eating dinosaurs that lived during the Early Cretaceous period, around 140 million years ago, in what is now Germany. This dinosaur belongs to a group called ceratopsians, which are known for their unique skull features, although the fossil of Stenopelix does not include a skull. Scientists named this dinosaur based on special traits found in its hips, which helped them identify it as a new type of dinosaur. Studying Stenopelix gives us important clues about the early evolution of ceratopsian dinosaurs and life in Europe during the time of the dinosaurs, even though we only have a partial skeleton to learn from.
Discovery and species
In 1855, a fossil of a small dinosaur was found in a sandstone quarry near Bückeburg on the Harrl. Most of its bones were in poor condition, so only impressions were left. These impressions have been used to make copies for study.
In 1857, a scientist named Christian Erich Hermann von Meyer named this dinosaur Stenopelix valdensis. The name comes from Greek words meaning "narrow pelvis." The fossil, called GZG 741/2, includes most of the dinosaur's body but not its head or neck. It is kept at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.
Description
Stenopelix was a small plant-eating dinosaur that lived about 140 million years ago. It grew to be about 1.4 meters (4.6 feet) long and weighed around 10 kilograms (22 pounds). Scientists know about this dinosaur from fossils that include parts of its body but not its head. One special feature that helps identify Stenopelix is the shape of its hips. The bones in its hips have unique details, like a rounded end on one part and a noticeable bend in another.
Classification
The classification of Stenopelix is still not fully agreed upon because its skull was not found. Before the 1960s, it was often placed in a group called ornithopods. In 1974, a scientist suggested it might be one of the oldest known pachycephalosaurs, but later research showed this was not correct.
More recent studies suggest Stenopelix might be a type of early ceratopsian. Some scientists still think it belongs to a group called Marginocephalia, while others see it as part of the chaoyangsaurids, a group that includes several early ceratopsians like Yinlong.
