The men's 200 metre individual medley event was part of the swimming competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics. It took place in the McDonald's Olympic Swim Stadium in Los Angeles, California on August 4, 1984. This exciting race combined four different swimming styles: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle.

Forty-six athletes from many countries took part in the preliminary heats. Only the eight fastest swimmers from these heats advanced to the final race. The event tested the athletes' skills in all four swimming techniques, making it one of the more challenging races in swimming.
