The Winter's Tale is a play by William Shakespeare that first appeared in the First Folio in 1623. Though it was once called a comedy, many today think of it as one of Shakespeare's late romances. The first three parts of the play are very serious and full of strong emotions, while the last two parts are happy and end well.

Actย II, scene III: Antigonus swears his loyalty to Leontes, in an attempt to save Leontes' young daughter's life. From a painting by John Opie commissioned by the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery for printing and display.

The play has been performed and adapted by many famous theatre people over the years. In the middle of the 1700s, David Garrick created a version called Florizel and Perdita. In the 1800s, people especially liked the part of the play set in the countryside. In the last half of the 1900s, the play was often performed fully using the original text from the First Folio.

Synopsis

John Fawcett as Autolycus in The Winter's Tale (1828) by Thomas Charles Wageman

The play begins with two kings, Leontes of Sicily and Polixenes of Bohemia, who are old friends. Polixenes is visiting Sicily but wants to return home after nine months. Leontes sends his wife, Queen Hermione, to convince Polixenes to stay, and she succeeds. However, Leontes becomes suspicious that Hermione and Polixenes are having an affair because she persuaded Polixenes so easily. He orders someone to harm Polixenes, but the plan is stopped, and Polixenes flees to Bohemia.

Leontes then accuses Hermione of being unfaithful and imprisons her. She gives birth to a daughter, but Leontes orders the baby to be left alone in a distant place. A group of people confirms that Hermione is innocent, but Leontes does not believe them. Sadly, Leontes' son dies because of the stress from these events, and Hermione is thought to have passed away.

The abandoned baby, named Perdita, is found by a shepherd and grows up with him. Sixteen years later, Perdita falls in love with Prince Florizel, Polixenes' son. Their fathers disapprove of their relationship at first, but eventually, everyone reunites happily. In the end, Hermione, thought to be dead, appears again, and the play ends with joy and forgiveness.
