Vinci is a small town in the Metropolitan City of Florence in the Italian region of Tuscany. It is famous because it is the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, a brilliant artist, scientist, and inventor who lived during the Renaissance.

Physical geography

Vinci is located on the slopes of Montalbano, a hilly area filled with vineyards and olive groves. The land there has special dry stone walls that hold up the terraces.

The oldest part of Vinci has a special shape that looks like a boat when viewed from above. This shape comes from two important towers: one from the Rocca dei Conti Guidi and one from the bell tower of the church of Santa Croce. Because of this, the historic center is sometimes called “Castel della Nave,” which means “Castle of the Ship.”
