WMFS-FM (92.9 MHz) is a commercial sports radio station based in Bartlett, Tennessee. It serves the Memphis, Tennessee area and is owned by Audacy, Inc.. This station is the official radio home for the Memphis Grizzlies, bringing basketball games and sports news to listeners.
The station's studios are located in Southeast Memphis, while its transmitter tower stands in Northeast Memphis. WMFS-FM uses modern HD Radio technology to deliver its broadcasts, offering clear and reliable coverage for fans of sports in the region.
History
Rock (1995–2009)
WMFS-FM started in 1995 by Belz Broadcasting with the name "Solid Rock 92.9 MFS!" It was later bought by Infinity Broadcasting and called "93X" in 2001. In 2006, Entercom Communications purchased the station.
The first song played when WMFS-FM began was "Rock You Like a Hurricane" by the Scorpions.
Before leaving radio, WMFS-FM was where people could listen to Howard Stern.
WMFS-FM was one of six radio stations in Memphis owned by Entercom, along with WMC-FM, WRVR-FM, WMFS, WLFP, and WMC. Entercom bought WMC, WMC-FM, and WMFS in 2006.
WMFS-FM studios are in a building in eastern Memphis. Before that, the studios were in the WMC-TV building on Union Avenue.
Sports (2009–present)
On May 21, 2009, WMFS-FM changed to a sports radio format, sharing its programming with WMFS 680 AM.
Starting with the 2011–12 season, WMFS-FM became the main radio station for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies.
