ZTE
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
ZTE Corporation is a large technology company from China that focuses on telecommunication equipment. It was started in 1985 and is now listed on the Hong Kong and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges.
ZTE makes many kinds of products, such as wireless networks, optical transmission systems, data equipment, software, and mobile phones. The company sells these products under its own name and also makes devices for other brands as an OEM.
ZTE has faced some problems in different countries because of its close ties to the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party. There were worries that this connection might allow too much watching of people. In 2017, ZTE was punished for sending U.S. technology to Iran and North Korea, which broke international economic sanctions. This led to a ban from the U.S. Department of Commerce on getting parts from U.S. companies for seven years. The ban ended in 2018 after ZTE made big changes and paid more fines. Later, in 2020, a U.S. group called the Federal Communications Commission said ZTE could be a danger to safety. By 2023, a European group, the European Commission, stopped ZTE from offering certain telecommunication services.
History
ZTE started in 1985 in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, as a small technology company. It grew quickly and became a big player in the world of telecommunications. ZTE went public, meaning it started selling shares to the public, first in Shenzhen in 1997 and later in Hong Kong in 2004.
ZTE began by selling its products mostly in China but then aimed to grow worldwide. By 2006, it became a leader in certain types of communication technology. By 2009, it was one of the top companies making equipment for mobile networks around the world.
In 2017, ZTE faced serious trouble for breaking rules about sending technology to places where it wasn't allowed, like Iran and North Korea. This led to big fines and restrictions on working with U.S. companies. After working with U.S. leaders, ZTE paid more fines and changed its management to follow the rules again.
ZTE continues to work on new technologies and has been involved in building networks in many countries, including a recent project in East Malaysia in 2025.
Ownership
ZTE is partly owned by the government of China. As of June 30, 2019, a company called Zhongxing Xin owned 27.40% of ZTE. The shareholders of Zhongxing Xin included Xi'an Microelectronics, which is owned by a state company, and Aerospace Guangyu, also owned by a state company. Another shareholder, Zhongxing WXT, was owned by the founders of ZTE. This mix of government and private ownership gives ZTE both state and private management styles.
Subsidiaries
ZTE has several international subsidiaries in countries including Indonesia, Australia, Germany, the United States, India, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Singapore, and Romania.
ZTEsoft works in the technology industry and provides products and services for phone companies and big projects like smart city plans.
Nubia Technology used to be fully owned by ZTE Corporation but is no longer fully owned by them.
Zonergy is a company that works with clean energy, such as solar power, and is partly owned by ZTE.
ZTE bought a big part of a Turkish company called Netaş Telekomünikasyon A.Ş. in 2016 and became its largest shareholder.
Products
ZTE has three main areas of business: carrier networks, government and corporate business, and consumer business. In October 2010, ZTE received a special security certification from the United States and Canada.
ZTE sells smartphones under different names, including Axon, Nubia, RedMagic, and Blade, to meet the needs of different types of phone users. The Axon series includes models like the Axon 7, Axon 7 mini, Axon 7 Max, Axon 9 Pro, Axon 10 Pro, and Axon 10s Pro.
Customers
In the 2000s, most of ZTE's customers were mobile network operators from the developing world, but ZTE products were also used in developed countries. Some of ZTE's clients from developed countries included Britain's Vodafone, Canada's Telus and Fido, Australia's Telstra, and France Telecom.
Many Chinese telecommunications operators are also customers of ZTE, including China Netcom, China Mobile, China Satcom, China Telecom, and China Unicom.
ZTE started selling smartphones in the United States in 2011. The company focused on making low-cost phones for discount and prepaid wireless carriers, including devices with features usually found in high-end products, like large high-resolution screens and fingerprint readers.
Sponsorship
In May 2016, ZTE started working with a German football team called Borussia Mönchengladbach as a partner.
Since 2015, ZTE has also helped several basketball teams in the United States, like the Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors, and New York Knicks.
Controversies
ZTE, a big tech company from China, has faced some serious issues in many countries. Some governments worried that using ZTE's equipment might let others spy on them. Because of these concerns, some places like the European Union have decided not to use ZTE's technology for important communication systems.
There have also been claims that ZTE did not always play fair when getting big contracts. In some cases, it was said that ZTE gave money to officials to win business. This has led to investigations and bans in several countries. Additionally, ZTE sold technology to a country that could use it to watch its own people, which raised more security worries.
