The 2020 Summer Olympics, also called Tokyo 2020, were big games where athletes from all over the world came to compete. They happened in Tokyo, Japan, from July 23 to August 8, 2021. They were supposed to be in 2020, but they moved to 2021 because of health worries.

Tokyo was chosen to host these games in 2013. Many new sports were added, like skateboarding, surfing, and karate. The United States won the most medals, but Japan, the host country, did very well too.

Bidding Process

Three cities wanted to host the 2020 Summer Olympics: Tokyo, Istanbul, and Madrid. The International Olympic Committee chose Tokyo on September 7, 2013, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Impact of Health Concerns

Because of health worries, most events were held without any fans in the stands. This was the first time the Olympics were ever postponed.

The Games

Many people from different countries took part. There were 11,420 athletes from 206 teams. The opening ceremony happened on July 23, 2021, at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo. Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka lit the Olympic cauldron.

Sports

The Games had many sports, including new ones like karate, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding. The goal was to make the Games more fun for younger people and to include more women.

Medals

Tokyo made special medals for the Olympics from old electronics. They turned these items into medals with different designs and ribbons.

Torch Relay

The torch for the Olympics started in Greece and then came to Japan. Because of health worries, the torch was kept safe until it could start its trip again. The torch ended in Tokyo where a tennis player lit a big fire to start the Games.

The 2020 Summer Olympics were a wonderful event that brought together athletes from around the world to compete in many exciting sports.
