The Almohad Caliphate

The Almohad Caliphate was a big empire that started in North Africa. It was ruled by a group of people called the Berbers. They lived a long time ago, in the 1100s and 1200s.

This empire grew to cover lots of places. It stretched across the Maghreb, which is a part of North Africa, and into the Iberian Peninsula, which we now call Spain and Portugal. In those lands, the part they ruled was called Al-Andalus.

The Almohad movement began with a man named Ibn Tumart. He came from the Masmuda tribes and lived in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. After Ibn Tumart passed away, another leader named Abd al-Mu'min started the Almohad caliphate. He ruled from 1130 to 1163 and made the city of Marrakesh very important.

People remember the Almohads for their buildings, books, and art. They built beautiful mosques and strong city walls. They also wrote many poems and stories. The Almohads liked to learn and kept libraries where people could study.

The Almohads used special white banners to show their beliefs. They also made pretty designs in their buildings and clothes. Even today, we can still see some of the things they built and created.
