Alpine Tundra

Alpine tundra is a special and cold place found high up in mountains all around the world. Because it is so high, the air is very cold and often windy. This makes it too hard for trees to grow, so you won’t see forests there.

Instead, the ground is covered with low, tough plants that can handle the cold and wind. These plants stay close to the earth to stay safe. Some of them are small flowers, grasses, and even lichens that stick to rocks.

You can find alpine tundra in many mountain ranges, like the Alps, the Himalaya, and the North American Cordillera. These places are often rugged with rocky peaks and steep slopes. The height where trees stop growing changes depending on where you are in the world.

Some animals that live in these cold, high places include the pika, marmot, and mountain goat. They are made to live in the cold and windy conditions of the alpine tundra.
