What Is Aluminium Oxide?

Aluminium oxide is a special material made from two things: aluminium and oxygen. You might also hear people call it alumina. It is found in nature and used in many things we use every day.

Where Do We Find It?

Aluminium oxide is found in a rock called bauxite. In nature, it can look like a shiny stone called corundum. Some types of corundum are very special and can be cut into beautiful gemstones, like red rubies and colorful sapphires.

Why Is It Important?

Aluminium oxide is very useful. It is very hard, so it is used to make things like sandpaper that scrub and clean. It can handle very hot temperatures, so it is used to protect metals. It is also used to make plastics stronger and to help make clear glass. Even our teeth stay clean because of it, as it is an ingredient in some toothpaste!
