Alutiiq
Adapted from Wikipedia ยท Explorer experience
The Alutiiq people are one of the groups of Alaska Natives. They live along the beautiful southern coast of Alaska. Their home includes places like Prince William Sound, the Kenai Peninsula, the Kodiak Archipelago, and the Alaska Peninsula.
Long ago, many Alutiiq villages were in the Kodiak archipelago. Today, many Alutiiq people still live in Alaska and work hard to keep their culture and traditions alive.
The Alutiiq people love the ocean and land. They used the sea for food, fishing for salmon and halibut, and hunting seals and sea lions. They also gathered berries and greens. In winter, they stayed warm in their homes and celebrated with stories, songs, and dances.
Some well-known Alutiiq people include Alvin Eli Amason, a painter, and Sven Haakanson, who helps keep Alutiiq history safe at the Alutiiq Museum. Their stories and art show the beauty and strength of the Alutiiq people.
