What is an Anniversary?
An anniversary is a special day that marks when something happened or when an institution began. People often remember and celebrate these days because they are important.
Celebrating Special Days
Many countries have special days called national days. These days might mark when a country became independent, or when it adopted a new constitution or government. These days help people come together to honor their history.
Sometimes, important dates in a monarch’s rule are celebrated, known as a "jubilee". These days help people remember and celebrate key moments in history.
Different Types of Anniversaries
Birthdays are the most common type of anniversary. People celebrate them each year on the day they were born. Sometimes the celebration is moved, like an official birthday or if the birthday falls on February 29.
Wedding anniversaries are also celebrated. People usually mark them on the same day of the year as the wedding.
The Latin phrase dies natalis (meaning "birth day") is often used to mark when something like a school or college (alma mater) was founded.
Anniversaries of nations are often named based on how many years have passed. They use Latin words or Roman numerals.
Fun Anniversary Names
For example, a 50-year anniversary is called a Golden anniversary. A 25-year anniversary is called a Silver anniversary. A 100-year anniversary is called a Centennial.
These special names make celebrating even more fun!
