What is an Anus?

An anus is a special opening in many animals’ bodies. It is found at the end of the digestive system. This system helps turn food into energy. The anus lets out waste that the body can’t use. This waste includes gases and solid material called feces.

How Does it Work?

In many animals, muscles called sphincters help control when waste leaves the body through the anus. Some animals, like birds and reptiles, have a different opening called a cloaca. This opening handles both waste and reproduction.

Why is it Important?

The anus played an important role in how animals developed over time. It helped shape how many animals look and work today. Even some simple sea creatures can grow and lose their anuses when they need to.
