Welcome to Assam!
Assam is a beautiful state in northeastern India. It is surrounded by tall mountains and flows between two big rivers: the Brahmaputra River and the Barak River. Assam is famous for its green tea fields and rich wildlife.
Nature and Wildlife
Assam is home to amazing animals and plants. You can find rare Indian rhinoceroses in special parks like Kaziranga National Park. These parks also have tigers, elephants, and many colorful birds. The forests and wetlands of Assam are full of life all year round.
Culture and Festivals
People in Assam love to celebrate! The biggest festival is called Bihu. There are three types of Bihu:
- Rongali Bihu in spring, when farming begins.
- Kongali Bihu when fields are green.
- Bhogali Bihu in winter, to thank nature for the harvest.
During Bihu, everyone dances, sings, and wears beautiful traditional clothes.
Food and Drinks
Assam has tasty food! A typical meal includes rice, lentils, and fish stew. Special flavors come from khar (a sour paste) and tenga (a type of lemon). Traditional drinks are enjoyed during festivals.

- The state flower is the Foxtail orchid.
- Assam has oil too—it was where India’s first oil well was dug in 1867.
