Aswan
Aswan is a beautiful city in Upper Egypt. It is the capital of the Aswan Governorate and is one of the oldest cities still lived in today. People have lived there for more than 2,600 years!
Aswan is a busy market and a favorite spot for tourists. It sits just north of the Aswan Dam on the east side of the Nile River. The city is known for its warm winters and is visited by people from all over the world.
The area around Aswan has many important old places. Five special monuments there are part of the Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae UNESCO World Heritage Site. These include tombs, the island of Elephantine, stone quarries with an Unfinished Obelisk, a monastery, and a historic cemetery. The Nubian Museum in Aswan shows many interesting things from the past. It has items saved before the Aswan Dam filled Lower Nubia with water.
Aswan is also part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for crafts and folk art. In 2017, it joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. The city has many colorful markets and beautiful views of the Nile. It is a wonderful place to learn about history and enjoy sunny days by the river.
