Australia at the Olympics
Australia has been part of the Olympic Games for a very long time. Australian athletes have gone to every Summer Olympic Games and almost every Winter Olympic Games. They have many happy memories and exciting stories from these games.
Early Days
Australia's Olympic story began in 1896 in Athens. An Australian athlete named Edwin Flack won gold medals in running and also tried tennis. In 1900, three Australians competed, and Frederick Lane won gold in swimming. Australia and New Zealand competed together as Australasia in 1908 and 1912 because they shared an Olympic committee.
Summer Olympics
Since 1920, Australia has sent its own athletes to the Summer Olympics. In 1956, Melbourne hosted the Summer Olympics, making it the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to do so. Australia did very well in sports like swimming and athletics. Famous athletes include Dawn Fraser, who won many medals in swimming, and Betty Cuthbert, who won gold in athletics.
Winter Olympics
Australia first joined the Winter Olympics in 1936. Their first Winter Olympic medal was a bronze in 1994. Australia has done well in sports like freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Alisa Camplin won gold in freestyle skiing in 2002, and Zali Steggall won bronze in snowboarding in 1998.

- Swimming: Australia is very good at swimming. Athletes like Emma McKeon and Ian Thorpe have won many medals.
- Athletics: Australia has many great runners and athletes. Cathy Freeman is famous for winning gold in the 400m race in 2000.
