Beech Trees
Beech trees are beautiful, tall trees that belong to a special group called the Fagaceae family. They grow naturally in parts of Eurasia and North America. There are 14 different kinds of beech trees!
One famous kind is the European beech (Fagus sylvatica). People love it for its lovely looks. Its wood is very strong and is used to make furniture, floors, and even parts of houses. Beech wood also burns well and can be used as firewood.
Beech trees have smooth bark and leaves with a center line and smaller lines running beside it. In the autumn, they lose their leaves. Beech trees make special nuts that grow inside spiky shells. These nuts can even be eaten!
These trees have been around for millions of years. Fossils of beech trees have been found from the time of the dinosaurs! Today, beech trees grow in many places, from mountains to low lands. They need deep, well-drained soil to grow best.
People also grow beech trees just for their beauty. Some special kinds, like the weeping beech and the copper beech, have very unique shapes. In places like England, you can see beautiful beech forests. Long ago, people used beech bark to write on and even made early books from beech wood.
