Boto
The boto is a special kind of dolphin that lives in the rivers of Brazil, especially in the Amazon and Orinoco rivers. These dolphins are different from the ones you might see in the ocean because they swim in fresh water. Many botos turn a lovely pink color as they grow older, especially the males.
People in the Amazon have fun stories about the boto. In their tales, the boto can change its shape to look like a person or a merman. They call it boto-cor-de-rosa, which means “pink boto” in Portuguese. These stories are a big part of the local culture and add magic to the river’s adventures.
Even though they are rare and need protection, botos are very special to the people who live near these rivers. They remind us how amazing nature can be.
