The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush was an exciting time when many people traveled to California to look for shiny gold. It started in 1848 when a man named James W. Marshall found gold near a place called Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The news spread quickly, and soon people from all over the world came to try their luck.
Many travelers, called "forty-niners" because 1849 was a very busy year, faced big journeys to reach California. Some sailed around South America, while others crossed land through places like Oregon on the California Trail. Cities like San Francisco grew very fast to help all the new visitors.
The Gold Rush helped California grow quickly. New roads, schools, and towns were built, and in 1850, California became a state of the United States. Although finding gold brought wealth to some, it was a challenging time for everyone. The story of the Gold Rush is remembered in books, movies, and even the name of the San Francisco 49ers football team.
