Canaan

Canaan was an ancient land in the Southern Levant. This area is now parts of Israel, Palestine, and parts of Jordan. People have lived there for thousands of years.

We learn about Canaan from old digs at places like Tel Hazor, Tel Megiddo, En Esur, and Gezer. The name "Canaan" often means the Promised Land in the Bible.

The people who lived in Canaan were called Canaanites. They were many different groups, both farmers and people who moved around. They grew crops and raised animals.

Later, the name Canaanites was used by the Ancient Greeks for people called Phoenicians. Some of these people moved to Carthage in North Africa.

Canaan was important to big empires like the Egyptian, Hittite, Mitanni, and Assyrian Empires. They all had interests in this land.

Today, the name Canaan makes people think of a special and happy place. It is often used in songs and stories.
