Captains Regent

The Captains Regent are the two leaders of San Marino, a small country near Italy. They are chosen every six months by the Grand and General Council, which is like the country's parliament. One pair starts in April, and another pair starts in October.

This tradition began in the year 1243, which is very old! It is similar to how ancient Rome had two leaders called consuls. But today, the Captains Regent are mostly symbols of San Marino. They help represent the country and make sure the government follows the rules, but they do not make big decisions.

When a new pair of Captains Regent starts, there is a special ceremony. People gather in a big square, and there are flags and music. The new leaders go to a church for a service and then make a speech. It is a happy time for San Marino.

In recent years, many women have become Captains Regent. In 2017, two women served together, which was a first! San Marino has had more female leaders than any other country in the world.
