Carl Benz

Carl Benz was a clever inventor from Germany. He loved making machines and dreamed of building a vehicle that didn’t need horses. In 1885, he created the very first car that people could buy, called the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. This car had three wheels and could go about 16 kilometers per hour (10 miles per hour).

Carl was born on November 25, 1844, in Mühlburg, which is now part of Karlsruhe. His family didn’t have much money, but his mother made sure he could go to school. He studied science and engineering and later worked with machines.

Carl and his wife, Bertha Ringer, helped each other a lot. In 1886, Carl got a special permission called a patent for his car. His company, Benz & Cie, became the first automobile factory in the world. In 1888, Bertha drove a long trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim to show how useful cars could be.

In 1926, Carl’s company joined with another company called Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft to make Daimler-Benz. This is why we know cars like Mercedes-Benz today. People call Carl Benz “the father of the car” because of his big contribution to making cars for everyone.

Today, there are many places that remember Carl Benz. In Ladenburg, you can visit a museum called the Automuseum Dr. Carl Benz to see old cars he helped make. There is also a school and a stadium named after him. His story shows how one person’s idea can change the world!
