What Is Courage?

Courage is a special feeling inside that helps us do something even when it feels scary. Everyone needs courage sometimes! It might mean trying a new thing, helping a friend, or standing up for what is right. Courage can be called bravery or being very brave.

There are two main kinds of courage. Physical courage is when we do something even if it might be hard or uncomfortable for our bodies. Moral courage is when we do the right thing, even if others do not agree. Both kinds show we care about doing what is good.

Why Courage Is Important

Many smart people from long ago talked about courage. In Greece, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle thought about what courage means. In China, the Tao Te Ching has ideas about courage, too. Courage is like a strong virtue called fortitude, which means staying strong and patient during hard times.

Courage in Everyday Life

Courage looks different for everyone. Sometimes it is as simple as speaking up in class or trying a new food. Other times, it might mean helping someone who is lost or hurt. Courage helps us face our fears and do what is important, even when we feel nervous. It makes us feel proud of ourselves for trying our best.
