What Is a Crest?

A crest is a fun design that sits on top of a shield. It is part of something called a heraldic achievement. Think of it like a special hat for a shield! The crest sits above a piece called the helm.

Long ago, knights wore armor and sometimes had decorations on their helmets. These decorations were the first crests. They made the knights look brave and strong during tournaments.

How Crests Look

In a full design, you will see the shield at the bottom. On top of the shield is the helm. And right on top of the helm is the crest. Around the base of the crest, there is a twist of cloth called a torse. The shield itself is called the arms, and the whole design is the achievement.

Why People Love Crests

People used crests to show who they were and where they came from. Even today, many places and families have their own special crests. They put them on important things like doors and dishes. In some parts of Europe, like Germany, crests are very important and people can have many of them.

Crests can be animals, wings, or even pictures of things that are not real. They make each family or place special and unique.
