What is a Crocus?
A crocus is a pretty little flower that grows from an underground part called a corm. These flowers can be white, yellow, orange, or purple. They are part of the iris family and love to bloom in autumn, winter, or spring. Their flowers close up at night or when the weather is cloudy.
Where Do Crocuses Live?
Crocuses grow naturally in many places, from the Mediterranean through North Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and all the way to Central Asia and China. You can find them in woodlands, scrublands, and meadows. They like cool places and can grow from sea level up to high mountains.
Why Do People Love Crocuses?
People grow crocuses in gardens because of their beautiful flowers. One special crocus, called Crocus sativus, is used to make saffron, a very valuable spice. Saffron comes from the dried part of the flower and is one of the most expensive spices in the world. Iran is the main place where saffron is made.
Crocuses are also loved because they show that spring is coming. Their bright colors bring joy to gardens and fields. They have been known for a very long time and were even used for coloring things long ago.
