What Is a Cuttlebone?

A cuttlebone is a hard, light shell inside a sea animal called a cuttlefish. Cuttlefish are part of a group called cephalopods. The cuttlebone is made of a special material called aragonite. It looks a bit like a small, thin shell.

How Does It Help Cuttlefish?

The cuttlebone helps the cuttlefish stay balanced in the water. It has special rooms inside that the cuttlefish can fill with air or water. This helps the cuttlefish move up and down easily. There is a tiny part called a siphuncle that helps control these rooms.

Fun Uses by People

Long ago, people used cuttlebones to make polishing powder for goldsmiths. Today, cuttlebones are used as a calcium-rich food for pet birds, chinchillas, hermit crabs, reptiles, shrimp, snails, and laying hens. You can find them at pet stores. They are not for humans to eat.

Cuttlebones are also used to make special lime and molds for tiny metal things like jewelry. They are strong and can handle high heat.
