The Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup
The Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup is a special trophy given to the winner of the Australian Open women's singles tennis tournament. It has been awarded since 1934. The cup is named after Daphne Akhurst, a famous Australian tennis player.
Originally, Daphne Akhurst kept the trophy because she won the Australian Open women's singles five times. Since she kept the original cup, a new one was made for future winners. Today, the real trophy stays with Tennis Australia, but each champion gets a copy to remember their win.
During the Australian Open, people can see the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup on display in Garden Square. It is a nice way to celebrate the history of women's tennis in Australia.
The trophy goes on a "Trophy Tour" around Australia before each Australian Open. It visits schools, clubs, and communities to share the history of Australian tennis. Sometimes, the trophy travels outside Australia, too.
The cup is made from silver found in Australia and has some gold. It is 18 inches tall. Winners of the Australian Open women's singles get a copy that looks like the main trophy kept by Tennis Australia.
Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan is the current winner of the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup. Margaret Court has won this trophy the most times, with eleven wins.
