The museum is in the Civic Center of Denver. It is one of the largest art museums between the West Coast and Chicago. One cool building is called the Martin Building. It was designed in 1971 by a famous Italian architect named Gio Ponti.

In 2018, the museum began making improvements. This helped make the spaces better for showing art, eating, and welcoming visitors. There is also a special place called The Petrie Institute of Western American Art. It cares for artworks from the American West.
