Dough is a soft, squishy paste made from flour and a little water or another liquid. It is the first step in making many tasty foods, especially breads. People mix flour with water and sometimes add yeast or other ingredients to make it rise.

Dough is used to make many foods like biscuits, cakes, cookies, dumplings, flatbreads, noodles, pasta, pastry, pizza, piecrusts, and scones. Different kinds of flour are used, such as wheat, rye, maize, rice, legumes, and almonds.

Most dough can stretch and squish. It is used for many breads, like bread rolls, and also for foods like ciabatta and focaccia. Some doughs use special mixes to keep them just right.

People have made dough for a very long time. They use many grains, not just wheat, to make bread. Some doughs are folded with fat to make layers, like in croissants and paratha.

Dough can be cooked in many ways. It can be baked, like in breads and cookies, or cooked on a griddle, like tortillas. Some dough foods are even fried, like fried dough foods.
