The Duchy of Aquitaine

The Duchy of Aquitaine was a big, old area in western and southern parts of what is now France. It was south of the river Loire and changed a lot over many years.

Long ago, in the 500s, it was part of Francia after the Salian Franks took over. Later, it became linked with the Carolingian Empire and then West Francia.

By the 1150s, the area became connected to England through marriages and inheritance. This made it part of the Angevin Empire under the Plantagenet dynasty. Over time, this led to some difficult times between England and France.

Today, the lands that were once Aquitaine are part of regions like Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Pays de la Loire, Centre-Val de Loire, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It was an important place with many different leaders and changes over the centuries.
