Earth's Magnetic Field
The Earth has a special invisible force around it called the Earth's magnetic field. This field is like a giant magnet that helps protect our planet. It stretches from deep inside Earth out into space.
This magnetic field is made by the movement of hot, liquid iron in Earth's outer core. Think of it like a big, spinning ball of metal creating a force around us.
The magnetic field helps us in many ways. It pushes away harmful energy from the Sun, called the solar wind. This keeps us safe. People have used tools called compasses for hundreds of years to find their way when they travel. Even some animals, like birds, use this field to know where to go.
The magnetic field has two poles, like a magnet. The North geomagnetic pole is near Ellesmere Island in Canada, and the South geomagnetic pole is far away. These poles move a little bit each year, but they stay close enough that compasses still work well.
The area around Earth protected by this magnetic field is called the magnetosphere. It looks like a big bubble and helps block harmful space energy. Sometimes, this energy makes beautiful lights in the sky called the aurorae.
Scientists study this magnetic field to learn more about our planet and how it changes over time. The field is very important for keeping Earth safe and helping us explore.
