Edinburgh Festival Fringe
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, often just called the Fringe, is the world’s biggest party for arts and performances. It happens for 25 happy days every August in Edinburgh, Scotland. Lots of people come to watch shows and have fun.
The Fringe started in 1947 when some theatre groups came to Edinburgh without being asked. They called themselves “Festival Adjuncts.” In 1948, a writer named Robert Kemp called it the “Fringe” because it was like extra shows around the big festival. Today, anyone can join! Performers from all over the world come to show their talents.
You can see many kinds of shows at the Fringe. There is theatre, comedy, dance, circus, music, and even shows just for kids. Comedy is very popular, and many famous comedians started here. The Fringe happens in many places—big theatres, small rooms, churches, and even unusual spots like the back of a taxi!
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society helps organize the festival. They make a big program book, sell tickets, and help performers. Their shop is on the Royal Mile, a famous street in Edinburgh. During the festival, they also have a place called Fringe Central to help everyone.
Many famous performers got their start at the Fringe. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who created the show Fleabag, first performed her show here. The Fringe has grown every year and is now the biggest arts festival in the world. The next Fringe will be in August 2026, and it will be full of exciting shows for everyone to enjoy!
