What is Extraterrestrial Intelligence?

Extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) means clever beings that might live far away from Earth, maybe on other planets or moons. These beings could be living things or very smart machines. Right now, scientists have not found real proof that they exist yet.

People have wondered about life on other worlds for a very long time. When we learned that Earth is just one planet around the Sun, and that many other planets and moons exist, scientists started to ask if any of those places might also have life. This idea is now one of the biggest questions in science!

Searching for Signs

Many scientists look for signs of smart technology from space, called technosignatures. They wonder if there are other clever beings out there. This search is also very popular in science fiction stories and popular culture. Famous scientist Stephen Hawking thought that because the universe is so big, intelligent life might exist somewhere else.

Fun Facts

Right now, we have not found any extraterrestrial life, smart or otherwise. Some ideas, like the Kardashev scale, try to guess how advanced a group of beings might be. The Drake equation is another way to guess how many smart, communicating civilizations might exist in our Milky Way galaxy. People all around the world are working to answer these exciting questions!
