Who Were the Eyak?
The Eyak were a group of people who lived near the Copper River Delta in Alaska. They were part of the Indigenous peoples of the Northwest Coast. Many Eyak people today live in the town of Cordova, Alaska and other places.
Their Home and Life
The Eyak lived close to the beautiful Copper River. They had four main villages and loved to fish for salmon. Their land stretched from Cordova to the Martin River and up to the Miles Glacier.
Their Language
The Eyak had their own special language. It was very close to other languages spoken by nearby groups. The last person who could speak Eyak as their first language was a woman named Marie Smith Jones. She passed away in 2008, but she helped people learn about her language and her people.
