Free jazz is a special kind of music that began in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It came from jazz, but musicians wanted to try something new and different. They did not want to follow the old rules of steady beats and fixed notes. Instead, they wanted to make music that felt free and full of creativity.

One important person in free jazz was Ornette Coleman. He helped start this new style with his recording called Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. In free jazz, musicians often play without strict rhythms or set musical forms. They focus on expressing their own unique sounds and feelings.

Free jazz sometimes uses ideas from music around the world, like from Africa or Asia. Musicians might also use special instruments or create their own. This style became an important part of jazz history because it showed how music can be free and full of imagination.
