King George VI

King George VI was the ruler of the United Kingdom and many other countries from 1936 until 1952. He was born on December 14, 1895, and was named Albert Frederick Arthur George. His family called him "Bertie."

Albert was the second son of King George V. Because he was not the oldest, he was not expected to become king. He joined the Royal Navy and later the Royal Air Force during the First World War. He also had a speech problem called a stutter, and he worked very hard to speak better in public.

When his brother Edward VIII became king in 1936, he decided to leave the throne that same year. Albert then became king and took the name George VI. He was not sure he wanted to be king, but he did his best.

During a very difficult time called the Second World War, King George VI stayed in London even when bombs were falling. He wanted to show that he was just like everyone else. His bravery helped give people courage.

After the war, many countries that were once part of the British Empire became independent. In 1949, George became the first Head of the Commonwealth. He passed away in 1952 at the age of 56. His daughter, Elizabeth II, became the new queen.

King George VI is remembered for his kind heart and his effort to help people feel united during hard times.
