Giovanni Schiaparelli: A Starry Explorer
Giovanni Schiaparelli was an Italian astronomer who loved to look at the stars and planets. He was born on 14 March 1835 in Savigliano and studied at the University of Turin. Later, he worked at famous places like the Brera Observatory in Milan.
Schiaparelli is best known for his work on the planet Mars. He made detailed maps of Mars and gave names to its features using stories from old times. This helped everyone talk about Mars in the same way. His maps were very important for scientists.
Besides Mars, Schiaparelli also studied other objects in space. He discovered an asteroid called 69 Hesperia and showed that some meteor showers come from comets. He also looked at planets like Mercury and Venus to learn how they spin.
Schiaparelli’s work made space easier to understand and study. He received many awards, like the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, for his amazing discoveries. Today, many places in space are named after him, like a crater on the Moon and a feature on Mercury.
