The Great Depression
The Great Depression was a very hard time for the world from 1929 to 1939. Many people lost their jobs and money. Factories made fewer things, and many banks and businesses closed.
It started in the United States after a big drop in stock prices called the Wall Street crash of 1929. Countries like the United Kingdom and Germany also had many people out of work.
Before this, the 1920s were a busy time called the "Roaring Twenties". But many banks and businesses made risky choices. When people spent less, jobs became hard to find. President Franklin D. Roosevelt started programs called the New Deal to help create jobs and support people.
The Great Depression changed daily life. People had less money, and the value of crops fell a lot. The world’s economy grew smaller, and trade between countries dropped. The start of World War II in 1939 helped end the Depression by creating new jobs.
The Great Depression was a very hard time for the world’s economies, lasting from 1929 to 1939. It began in the United States when the stock market crashed in 1929, causing many people to lose money. Even though the market tried to recover, it kept falling, and many jobs were lost.
The problem soon spread to other countries because people and businesses stopped trading as much. Some places felt the effects more than others. For example, Germany had big problems, while the United Kingdom did not suffer as much. The drop in trade and changes in money made the situation worse for everyone. By 1933, world trade had fallen to just one-third of what it was four years earlier.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt started many programs to help people find jobs and get support. These programs are called the New Deal. They helped build parks, schools, and many other things we use today.
The Great Depression changed how countries handle their money and jobs. It showed how important it is for governments and banks to work together to keep the economy strong.
Many books and stories were written about this time. One famous book is The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. It tells the story of a family who had to travel to find work. These stories help us remember what life was like during this difficult time.
