Ground Sloths

Ground sloths were large, special kinds of sloths that lived long ago in the Americas. They were not like the small tree sloths we see today. Some ground sloths, like Megatherium, were as big as modern elephants! They walked on the ground and roamed many places.

These amazing animals first lived in South America. Over time, they traveled to many lands, including the Greater Antilles, North America, and even Alaska. They lived in many different places, from the cold south of Patagonia to far north in Alaska.

Ground sloths had very interesting features. They had strong bodies and broad backs. Their teeth were special because they did not have enamel, like most animals. They also had strong claws on their hands and feet. Some ground sloths could even stand up on two legs to reach tall plants!

These sloths ate only plants, like leaves and grass. They moved slowly and had ways to stay safe, like using their claws. Even though they could not run, they found clever ways to protect themselves. Scientists think ground sloths took care of their babies for a long time, just like modern sloths do.
