The Hadal Zone

The hadal zone is the deepest part of the ocean. It is found in long, narrow valleys called oceanic trenches. These places are about 6 to 11 kilometers below sea level. Even though they are very deep, many kinds of animals live there.

Most of these deep places are in the Pacific Ocean, the biggest ocean on Earth. Scientists found that life changes a lot at very deep levels. In 1956, a scientist named Anton Frederik Bruun gave this deepest part the name β€œhadal.” He named it after Hades, the ancient Greek god of the underworld.

Even with no sunlight, very cold temperatures, and very high pressure, many animals make their home in the hadal zone. Some of these animals are fish, sea cucumbers, and tiny worms. These creatures have special ways to survive the deep sea. Scientists use special robots to explore these deep places and learn more about the amazing life there.
