Welcome to Halifax, Nova Scotia

Halifax is the biggest and most important city in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It is also the largest city in all of Atlantic Canada. People often call it the Halifax Regional Municipality, or HRM.

A City of Many Parts

Halifax was formed in 1996 when four smaller areas joined together. These areas are Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax County. Today, it is a busy place with many jobs and businesses.

Important Places and Jobs

Important workplaces in Halifax include the Department of National Defence, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Health Authority, Saint Mary's University, the Halifax Shipyard, and the Port of Halifax. People in the countryside around Halifax work in farming, fishing, mining, forestry, and getting natural gas.

A Lovely City

Halifax has warm summers and mild winters because of the warm water from the Gulf Stream. The city has many beautiful places to walk and play, like gardens, squares, big parks, and old sites. One famous square is the Grand Parade, where people have concerts and events. Another popular spot is the wooden Halifax Boardwalk, a long walk by the water.

The Halifax Common is Canada’s oldest park. People play sports there, relax in the sun, or fly kites. Nearby is the Halifax Public Gardens, with beautiful plants and trees.

Fun and Culture

Halifax is a lively place for culture. The city has art places, theatres, museums, and spots for sports and events. Well-known spots include the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, and the Neptune Theatre (Halifax, Nova Scotia).

Watching Sports

Halifax has many sports teams. You can watch them play at places like the Scotiabank Centre. The Halifax Mooseheads are a famous hockey team that has won many championships.

Getting Around

People can get around Halifax using buses and ferries operated by Halifax Transit. The ferries connect Halifax and Dartmouth and are the oldest continuously running ferry service in North America. There are also many bike paths and special lanes just for bicycles.

Halifax is a wonderful place to live and visit, with lots to see and do!
