What is a Herring?
A herring is a small, shiny fish that lives in the ocean. They are very important because many bigger fish and animals eat them. Herring often swim together in big groups called schools. You can find them in cooler waters of the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans, like the Baltic Sea.
Types of Herring
There are different kinds of herring. The most common is the Atlantic herring. Another type is the Pacific herring. Scientists study these fish to learn more about them. Some other fish, like the lake herring, are also called herrings even though they are a little different.
Why People Like Herring
Herring have been important for people for a very long time. People catch them to eat. They can taste yummy when they are salted, smoked, or pickled. In the United Kingdom, people called herring "silver darlings" because they shine in the water. Herring also have healthy fats that are good for our bodies.
How Herring Live
Herring eat tiny plants and animals in the ocean, like small sea creatures called copepods. Many animals, such as seabirds, dolphins, and big fish, eat herring. People also catch herring for food and to use as bait for other fish.
Herring lay lots of eggs on rocks or seaweed. These eggs hatch into tiny babies that grow up to become herring. By the time they are a year old, they are big enough to make their own eggs.
Fun Fact
Herring have been so important that they helped build some towns, like Amsterdam, many years ago. They have been a big part of fishing and eating for hundreds of years!
