History of Greece
Greece has a very old and interesting history. The land that is now Greece has been home to many people for thousands of years. The Greek people have created wonderful stories, art, and ideas that we still enjoy today.
Ancient Times
Long ago, people lived in simple villages and farms. They built beautiful palaces and made special statues. Two important groups were the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete and the Mycenaean Greek people on the mainland. These early Greeks were clever and loved to trade with other lands.
Later, Greece had many small cities called poleis. Famous cities like Athens and Sparta were very powerful. They had great thinkers, artists, and leaders. People invented the alphabet, made theaters for plays, and built strong buildings like the Parthenon.
Roman and Byzantine Times
After a time of fighting, Greece became part of the Roman Republic. Even then, Greek culture stayed strong. Romans loved Greek art and ideas. Later, Greece was part of the Byzantine Empire, where the Orthodox Church became very important. Beautiful churches and monasteries were built all over Greece.
Ottoman Rule and Freedom
For many years, Greece was ruled by the Ottoman Empire. Life was hard, but Greeks kept their traditions and faith. In the early 1800s, Greeks fought for their freedom. With help from other countries, they won and became an independent nation in 1829. The capital was moved to Athens, and Greece started to grow again.
