Hydropower
Adapted from Wikipedia · Explorer experience
Hydropower is a way to use the energy from moving water to make electricity. It is like using the power of a river to spin a turbine, which then creates electricity. People have used water to do work for thousands of years, like grinding grain with watermills.
One of the biggest hydropower projects in the world is the Three Gorges Dam in China. It is very large and helps provide electricity to many people. Hydropower is a clean way to make energy because it does not pollute the air like burning coal or oil does.
Hydropower can also store energy. This is done using a system called pumped-storage hydroelectricity. When there is extra electricity, it is used to pump water up to a high place. When more electricity is needed, the water is let down to spin turbines again.
People have used hydropower for a long time. Ancient Greeks and Chinese used waterwheels to grind food and power machines. Today, hydropower helps many countries get the electricity they need to light homes, run schools, and power factories.
Hydropower is important because it gives a steady supply of power and helps economic development in many places. It is one of the ways we can use renewable energy to take care of our planet.
