Welcome to Iceland!

Iceland is a beautiful island country between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean. It is linked culturally and politically with Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. The official language is Icelandic.

Iceland has amazing landscapes. You can find volcanic plateaus, sand and lava fields, mountains, glaciers, and rivers. Even though it is close to the Arctic Circle, Iceland has a milder climate because of the warming effect of the Gulf Stream.

Long ago, Iceland was first settled in 874 AD by a Norwegian chieftain named Ingólfr Arnarson. For many years, it was an independent group led by the Althing. Later, it was ruled by Norway and then Denmark. In the early 20th century, Iceland worked hard to become independent, and it finally did in 1944. Today, Iceland is known for its strong economy and great public services like health care and education. Iceland is part of NATO but does not have a standing army.
