The Indian National Congress is a very old and important political party in India. It was started on December 28, 1885, making it one of the oldest parties in the country. People often call it the Congress Party or simply Congress.

Why It’s Important

The Indian National Congress played a big role in helping India gain its freedom from the United Kingdom. Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, the party led peaceful protests and worked hard to bring independence. After India became free in 1947, the Congress party helped build the new nation. Many of India’s prime ministers came from this party, including Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.

What It Believes In

The Congress party believes in fairness and equality for everyone. It supports good education, healthcare, and jobs for people, especially in villages. The party also respects all religions and works to keep peace among different groups. It has helped create programs to support farmers and workers.

Leaders and Prime Ministers

Many famous leaders have come from the Congress party. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister of India. Indira Gandhi was the first woman to be prime minister. Later, Manmohan Singh served as prime minister for many years. These leaders helped shape modern India.

Today

Today, the Congress party is still active in Indian politics. It works in many states and tries to help people with good policies. Even though it is not always in power, it remains an important part of India’s political history and future.

The Indian National Congress has a long and proud history, and it continues to play a role in India’s story.
